Ken Januski BirdPrints

In late 2010 I took up printmaking for the first time in many years. I had studied it briefly in Berkeley Student Union classes before I started my actual classes in the Studio Art Department where I eventually got a B.A and M.A. Other than that I've done little printmaking over the years.

Who knows why I decided to try linoleum block prints in 2010? Though I'd enjoyed working in both pastel and felt-tip pen during 2009-2010 they each had their shortcomings, at least for me. I felt that relief prints, especially linocuts and woodblocks, might have some similarities to these media but without the problems. Additionally linocut seemed to lend itself to abstraction. I also liked the idea of being able to do multiple, more affordable prints.

Once I started I also found that they engaged my love of process, of having a dialog with my materials rather than dictating what I wanted them to do(often a losing cause anyway).
