The young veery watercolor was done in May, 2009 based on a photo taken at Shenandoah National Park in May 2009. The charcoal and pastel drawings of the Acadian Flycatcher is based on a photo taken in Shenandoah in May, 2008. The charcoal and pastel drawings of the Wood Duck and ducklings are based on photos Ken took at Tinicum(John Heinz Wildlife Refuge in Philadelphia, PA) on Memorial Day weekend in 2008. These are Ken's first representational pastel work in many years. Charcoal and pastel allow far more mistakes and reworking than watercolor so they were a pleasant change from the more disciplined and less familiar medium of watercolor, which he took up in 2006. The Canada Warbler was photographed in Shenandoah in May, 2007. The Carolina Wren was seen in the snow at Morris Arboretum in Philadelphia. The Red-Eyed Vireo is based on another photo taken in Shenandoah National Park. The bottom images show the progression of a watercolor of robins. This was based on a photo of nine robins at his backyard birdbath in the winter of 2007. It was his first watercolor in more than 20 years.
